Recently, I had the opportunity to speak at the SEAI Energy Show in The RDS as part of a two-hour session on the Best Practice stage titled “Built to Retrofit – Upskilling & Digital Tools for Retrofit Professionals.”
Our session brought together a range of organisations including LOETB / St Andrews, EduGreen Connect, Prime19, BERWOW, Retrokit, and SEAI, each offering a different perspective on how the construction and retrofit sector is evolving.
A Timely Conversation
The focus of the session couldn’t have been more relevant. As Ireland accelerates its retrofit targets and broader climate ambitions, the need for a skilled, adaptable workforce is becoming increasingly urgent.
The discussion explored how the sector is responding to this challenge—not just through traditional training routes, but through flexible upskilling, reskilling, and the integration of digital tools that support delivery at scale.
A key theme that emerged was that retrofit is no longer just a technical challenge—it’s a workforce challenge.
The Role of Green Skills
During my contribution, I spoke about the growing importance of green skills across the construction and retrofit sector. These skills go beyond technical expertise. They include digital capabilities, sustainability awareness, and the ability to work across evolving systems and standards.
However, one of the biggest barriers remains – visibility. Many individuals are unsure how their existing skills translate into green careers, while employers often struggle to identify talent with the right capabilities.
Introducing EduGreen Connect
This is where EduGreen Connect comes in.
As part of my presentation, I introduced the platform as a practical solution to help bridge the green skills gap. EduGreen Connect is designed to connect learners, educators, and industry through a single, AI-enabled platform.
It enables users to:
- Understand their current skills set
- Identify gaps for specific green career pathways
- Access relevant, accredited training opportunities
- Build a digital skills passport
- Connect with job opportunities
For employers, it supports a move towards skills-first hiring—helping to match candidates based on what they can do, rather than solely on qualifications.
Showcasing Education in Action
Alongside the speaking session, IKC3 / EduGreen Connect also shared a stand with the UCC Sustainability Academy, where the focus was on showcasing educational pathways and opportunities in sustainability.
This was a valuable complement to the panel discussion. While the session explored the challenges and solutions at a strategic level, the stand allowed for more direct engagement with attendees—many of whom were actively exploring how to upskill or transition into green roles.
The UCC Sustainability Academy is doing particularly strong work in this space, delivering programmes that are equipping people with practical, in-demand sustainability skills. Their approach highlights the importance of accessible, high-quality training in building the talent pipeline needed for the low-carbon transition.
Digital Tools Driving Change
Another strong takeaway from the session was the role of digitalisation in enabling retrofit at scale. Across all speakers, there was a clear emphasis on tools that improve planning, streamline grant compliance, enhance client engagement, and reduce administrative burden.
These technologies are not just improving efficiency—they are fundamentally changing how retrofit projects are delivered.
Collaboration Across the Ecosystem
What stood out most was the level of collaboration across education providers, industry, and state bodies. Addressing the skills gap requires a coordinated approach, and it’s encouraging to see initiatives aligned around this shared goal.
From micro-credentials to work-based learning and new digital platforms, there is a clear shift toward more accessible and responsive training pathways.
Looking Ahead
Participating in the Energy Show was a valuable opportunity to share what we’re building with EduGreen Connect and to hear directly from others working at the forefront of the sector.
The challenge ahead is significant—but so is the opportunity. By investing in green skills, embracing digital tools, and continuing to collaborate, we can build a workforce ready to deliver Ireland’s retrofit and sustainability ambitions.
